This is a non-invasive ultrasound that is performed on upper and lower extremities. The purpose of this test is to look for blockages in the arteries due to plaque build-up. Plaque, or hardening of the arteries, is due to nicotine use, high cholesterol levels and hereditary factors. This test consists of imaging the arteries first, then applying blood-pressure cuffs at various levels on the extremeties. This monitors the circulation of blood, reaching each level where the cuffs are applied. A significant drop from one level to another indicates blockage in the area. This test can vary from 45 minutes to one hour and requires no preparation.
