Hemorrhoids are swollen veins that are called internal hemorrhoids when they are just inside the anus. They are called external hemorrhoids when they are at the anal opening. Our surgeons only treat internal hemorrhoids. If you feel your hemorrhoids are external, please see your medical doctor for treatment. There are many causes for hemorrhoids including: chronic constipation, prolonged sitting, pregnancy, obesity among others. Some signs and symptoms of hemorrhoids can include bleeding from the rectum, protrusion of the hemorrhoid to the outside, pain, itching and blood in the stool. Your doctor may need to complete several tests before he is able to determine that your symptoms are from hemorrhoids.
Once this is established, most internal hemorrhoids can be treated with an office procedure called hemorrhoid ligation. During this procedure, the surgeon places a very small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid to cause it to shrivel and fall off. This procedure usually takes less than 5 minutes and you may go home within 15 minutes.
You will be asked to go home and rest for the next 8 hours. It is best if patients try to lie down and avoid having a bowel movement for that period of time. Some discomfort and bleeding is normal. Please call us if you have more than two tablespoons of blood at any one given time or if your pain is not controlled at home.
