The aorta is the main artery that delivers blood away from the heart to all parts of the body. We measure the size of the vessel in two different views in search of weak areas. Any ballooning out of the walls represents an aneurysm. Anyone who has an aneurysm should be followed up with an exam and ultrasound to assess the growth of the aneurysm. Elevated blood pressures may cause an increase in the size of an aneurysm so the blood pressure will be monitored closely and taken at each exam. This test takes approximately 15 minutes and requires the patient to fast for six to eight hours before the ultrasound.
